Phoenixville Borough Awarded Over $1.3 Million in State Grants
At their Board Meeting on Thursday, March 16, 2023, the Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA) approved a multitude of projects across the state. The Borough of Phoenixville was fortunate enough to be awarded two grants. The Multimodal Transportation Fund (MTF) awarded $600,000 for improvements to the Bridge and Starr Street intersection, and the Local Share Account – Statewide Fund (LSA) awarded $750,000 for the Phoenix Wheel Project.
The funds awarded for the Bridge and Starr Street intersection will allow the Borough to create a four-way intersection with proper turning lanes, ADA-compliant crosswalks, and will provide pedestrian connection in that area. The Phoenix Wheel Project is a partnership between the Borough and the Schuylkill River Heritage Center, and will reconstruct the world’s oldest Ferris wheel into a sculpture. This sculpture, along with the expansion of the French Creek Trail, will create a recreational and aesthetic destination.
Borough Council President Jon Ewald said, “Council appreciates the continued and vital support it receives from our state representatives. The MTF grant will serve to enact permanent, tangible improvements for the safety and ease of pedestrians, commuters, heavy trucks and SEPTA at one of the Borough’s busiest intersections. Additionally, the LSA grant will help the Borough preserve a vital piece of Phoenixville’s history, the Phoenix Wheel, and allow the reconstructed amusement wonder to once again rise up from the heart of the Borough.
Borough Manager, E. Jean Krack reiterated Mr. Ewald’s sentiments, saying “On behalf of Borough Council, we want to express our most sincere appreciation for the true collaboration of support from Senators Carolyn Comitta and Katie Muth, and State Representatives Melissa Shusterman, Daniel Friel Otten, Paul Friel. Streets for All Survey We believe everyone should have safe and reliable transportation choices. A community’s infrastructure should support residents of all ages and abilities to make trips by walking or cycling — because it is convenient, affordable, and promotes a healthy lifestyle. The Borough of Phoenixville is partnering with GVF, a nonprofit with over 30 years of transportation and mobility planning experience, on the Streets for All project. The project aims to provide safer streets through the goals and recommendations outlined in Chester County’s Complete Streets Policy and the Active Transportation Inventory (ATI) Plan and through community input and engagement. We want to hear about your experiences with the current transportation infrastructure and improvements you would like to see. Please take this brief survey and share your feedback. POLICEWe congratulate Detective Sgt. Patrick Mark on his graduation from the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police (NJSACOP) Region 5 Command and Leadership Academy. This program was developed by the NJSACOP, in partnership with the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, and focuses on leadership as a science, logical & critical thinking, decision making, communications, and conflict management.
To develop the intensive and academically-rigorous 13-week program, NJSACOP officials traveled to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point to work with the Academy's Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership to adapt the fabled West Point model of command and leadership to the needs of law enforcement.
The result of this collaboration is the NJSACOP Command & Leadership Academy, a unique blend of theory and application. Candidates with the greatest leadership potential are selected for this highly competitive program from municipal, county, state, and federal agencies from throughout the region.
Det/Sgt. Mark excelled in the program and was the recipient of the Chief Harry Wilde Academic Achievement Award for academic excellence!
